Agriculture of the future: New communication standard with High-Speed ISOBUS
November 14, 2025

The days when only farmers communicated with each other in the fields are long gone. Agricultural machinery is becoming increasingly intelligent thanks to the growing use of high-resolution sensors and cameras, telematics and remote diagnostics. As a consequence, the amount of continuously generated data is steadily on the rise.
The resulting opportunities for increasing efficiency, for example through precision farming, plant-specific fertilisation or sowing, are diverse. At the same time, there is growing pressure to innovate in agricultural technology in order to optimise processes.

New communication basis for intelligent systems

These requirements demand a significantly more powerful communication protocol. The current ISOBUS Standard reaches its limits when it comes to the fast, parallel exchange of huge amounts of data between networked systems.
High-Speed ISOBUS (HSI) represents the next generation of machine communication. Thanks to Single-Pair Ethernet, HSI transmits data up to 4,000 times faster – the basis for efficient communication, high-frequency sensor data and autonomous systems.
In addition, HSI maintains manufacturer-independent operational and diagnostic compatibility with existing ISOBUS components through its support of CAN-Tunneling. According to the current state of discussions, the basis for diagnostics is SOVD (Service Oriented Vehicle Diagnostics) – a proven diagnostic standard from the automotive industry that is being further optimised for the requirements of agriculture.

DSA is actively shaping the future of the standard

As a member of the Agricultural Industry Electronics Foundation (AEF) and the Association for Standardisation of Automation and Measuring Systems (ASAM), DSA is directly involved in the standardisation of High-Speed ISOBUS.

DSA outlined the current status together with Maschinenfabrik Bernard KRONE GmbH & Co. KG in a presentation entitled ‘High Speed ISOBUS: Standardizing Communication and Diagnostics for Next-Generation Machinery’ at LAND.TECHNIK AgEng 2025.
